How to tell if cantaloupe has gone bad

  • Soft, sunken patches on the rind
  • A boozy, fermented smell at the stem scar
  • Weeping juice or mold at the blossom end
  • Flesh gone watery and stringy rather than firm

When in doubt, throw it out.

Wash the rind before you cut it — the knife drags whatever’s on the outside straight through the flesh.
