2–3 months
Pantry, from purchase — USDA FoodKeeper guidance for popcorn (commercially popped in bags)

A sealed bag of ready-popped popcorn keeps 2–3 months, but an opened one is down to 1–2 weeks before it goes to styrofoam — clip it shut and it’ll reach the far end.

Can it sit out?

Bagged popcorn is shelf-stable, so sitting out at room temperature isn’t the safety question — storage time is.

How to tell if bagged popcorn has gone bad

  • Pieces that bend and chew instead of shattering
  • A rancid, oily smell off the seasoning
  • A stale, flat taste on the first handful
  • A greasy bag with the oil gone dark

When in doubt, throw it out.

Damp air is what kills it — a few minutes in a low oven revives limp popcorn, but nothing revives rancid butter flavouring.
