How to tell if store-bought bread has gone bad

  • Blue-green or pink fuzz on any slice — the whole bag goes, not just that slice
  • A cellar-damp smell rolling out when the bag opens
  • Condensation beaded on the inside of the bag
  • Slices gone hard and dry from the heel inward

When in doubt, throw it out.

USDA does list 2–3 weeks in the fridge, but cold bread goes stale far faster than it goes bad — the freezer is the better half of that trade.
